Suprapubic catheter
What is a suprapubic catheter?
A suprapubic catheter – in short SPC – is a bladder catheter. This catheter drains the urine through the abdominal wall (suprapubic). To place the SPC, the abdominal wall gets punctured which enables the invasive insertion of the catheter above the pubic bone. The catheter is most likely fixated by using a balloon or less often it is fixated by sewing the catheter on the skin.
Suprapubic catheter – Silicone catheter for a long-term usage
Bladder catheters are used for therapy or examination of different diseases and drains the urine out of the body. Made out of either a 100 % silicone or out of silicone elastomer, suprapubic catheters are designed to be used as artificial tubes, which are intended for long-term or temporary drainage.
The suprapubic catheters are often used in connection with kidney or urinary tract diseases, as well as any type of disturbances which affect the bladder emptying. To place the catheter into the bladder, it goes through the abdominal wall above the pubic bone. The placement takes place through a small invasive surgery. Thereby the abdomen gets punctured, to insert the catheter.
2-way integral balloon catheters – Suprapubic catheters
As a one-way catheter a suprapubic catheter is fixated by sewing it on to the abdominal wall. Though the usage is temporarily – most likely used as a perioperative catheterisation. Whereas the 2-way catheters from GHC are well suited for a permanent artificial drainage of urine, which are equipped with a balloon for blocking the catheter. Thanks to the balloon, a fixation by sewing it on to the skin, which also may cause certain infection risks, is not necessary anymore. Furthermore, suprapubic catheters ensure the highest possible level of hygiene, it enhances the wear comfort and helps to reduce urinary tract infections. The placement of a suprapubic catheter is relatively easy. Besides that, suprapubic bladder catheters offer a good possibility for a bladder irrigation by using an irrigation catheter, to remove coagulated blood or infections out of the bladder.
